Getting around Slovakia without unnecessary costs: city tickets, trains, buses, airports and driving. Checked on 2 October 2026. Bratislava fares below belong to IDS BK; other cities have their own tickets and rules.
Public transport in Bratislava
DPB buses, trams and trolleybuses belong to IDS BK alongside regional buses and participating trains. Choose a ticket by time and zones rather than vehicle type; transfers are allowed within its validity. International and commercial services are not automatically included.
Within Bratislava you need zones 100 + 101. Since 1 June 2025, zone 100 counts as one zone; advice to count it twice is outdated. For journeys beyond the city, enter your destination in the IDS BK planner, as a city ticket may not cover the whole route.
Tickets and prices in 2026
Full fares for zones 100 + 101: 30 minutes costs €1.20 on paper / €1.09 electronically; 60 minutes €1.80 / €1.60; 24 hours €5.40 / €4.85; 72 hours €10.70 / €9.68. These are the relevant IDS BK ticket prices, not SMS fares.
A standard personal pass for zones 100 + 101 costs €16.20 for 7 days, €40.50 for 30 days, €108.20 for 90 days and €263 for 365 days. Discounted and transferable passes have different prices. Compare a monthly pass with your expected single journeys; for a short visit, compare a day ticket with your sightseeing plans.
Using your ticket correctly
Validate a paper ticket from a machine when first boarding; for a train, use the station validator before boarding. Do not validate it again when transferring. A ticket issued by a regional bus driver for the journey needs no further validation. Check duration and zones before buying.
An IDS BK app ticket must already be valid before boarding; a purchased ticket that has not become valid is insufficient. For SMS payment, wait for the valid ticket message before boarding: sending the request alone does not authorise travel. Keep your phone charged and your ticket available for inspection.
Check night services separately: daytime routes may not operate at night, and frequencies vary by day. For a pushchair, check the timetable for an accessible low-floor service. Wi-Fi, USB sockets and air conditioning are not guaranteed on every vehicle.
Children and bicycles
IDS BK concessions and ZSSK free train travel are separate schemes. Check the relevant operator’s age, document and ticket requirements; a student card does not confer identical benefits across all transport.
Bicycles on IDS BK buses, trams and trolleybuses generally require a separate luggage ticket. Boarding depends on space and the driver’s permission; a standard vehicle accommodates at most two bicycles. On weekdays the permitted times are 09:00–13:00 and 18:00–06:00, with no such time restriction on weekends and public holidays. Wheelchairs and pushchairs have priority when boarding together. Trains use the rail operator’s bicycle fares and conditions.
Trains across Slovakia
Start an intercity rail journey with a search on ZSSK’s website: enter the date and stations, then compare direct trains with connections. Check the exact station: Bratislava hlavná stanica and Bratislava-Petržalka are in different parts of the city. Other operators serve some routes, and one operator’s ticket is not automatically universal.
Before paying, check travel class, refund conditions and seat availability: a ticket and a seat reservation are not always the same. Check your train’s conditions for bicycles, large luggage and pets. ZSSK free travel depends on passenger category and registration; foreign visitors should not assume eligibility based only on age or any student document.

Intercity buses
Compare buses and trains for your travel date, including the last return service. Check Slovak Lines and FlixBus for international journeys and the relevant operator for regional routes. Consider the stop, baggage allowance, refunds and connection time: the cheapest ticket may not provide the most convenient journey.
Airports and transfers
Bus 61 connects Bratislava Airport BTS with the main railway station; N61 provides the night service. The terminal stop is in front of the departures hall. Choose ticket duration for the entire journey, including transfers and walking, and check the timetable for your flight date.
Vienna Airport requires a separate international journey; an IDS BK city ticket does not cover Schwechat. Slovak Lines runs services from Bratislava to Vienna Airport. Check the exact stop, arrival time, baggage allowance and change conditions before booking, and allow time for traffic and check-in. Flight destinations are seasonal: confirm them with the airport and airline.

Roads and vignettes
This vignette section was checked against NDS information on 2 October 2026. Slovak vignettes are electronic: the entitlement is linked to the vehicle plate and registration country, with no sticker required.
Where to buy the official vignette
The official Slovak vignette store is eznamka.sk, operated through the National Motorway Company NDS system. Buying directly avoids an intermediary's additional fee. You can also use the official eznamka app or sales points displaying its logo.
2026 prices and validity
1 day: €8.10; 10 days: €10.80; 30 days: €17.10; 365 days: €90. Prices include VAT. A one-day vignette expires at 24:00 on the selected calendar day, not 24 hours after purchase. For the other options, the selected start date counts towards validity. The 365-day vignette is not tied to the calendar year.
How to buy and check it
Open the official store, choose payment for one vehicle and the vehicle product, then select duration and start date. Enter the plate without spaces or hyphens and the vehicle's registration country, not the driver's nationality. Recheck the plate, category and dates before paying. Keep the purchase confirmation and use the official validity checker with the plate and registration country.
Complete payment before entering a charged section. Do not assume you can drive without a vignette to the first petrol station or rely on where cameras might be located. If the plate is wrong, follow the official correction process; a bank debit alone does not show that the entitlement covers the correct vehicle.
Which vehicles need a vignette?
A normal passenger car needs a vehicle vignette on charged sections. The rules cover two-track vehicles and combinations up to 3.5 tonnes, as well as M1 vehicles regardless of their maximum permitted weight. For an M1/N1 vehicle with an O1/O2 trailer, a combined maximum technically permissible weight above 3.5 tonnes requires a separate trailer vignette too. Use the permitted weights in the registration documents, not the luggage weight on the day. Other heavy vehicles may fall under the separate myto system.
Charged sections around Bratislava
A motorway number does not imply the same charging rules along its whole length. NDS's 13 July 2026 guidance says the D4 outer bypass from Rača to the D2/D4 junction near Jarovce is free for passenger cars, but the roughly 2 km D4 section between the Austrian Jarovce/Kittsee border and that junction is charged. The D2 section from the Čunovo/Rajka border to the D2/D4 junction is also charged. D1 towards Senec is charged beyond the D1/D4 interchange, as is R7 beyond its D4 junction towards Šamorín. Check the official list and map before travelling, including temporary exemptions.

Driving rules
For a standard passenger car, default limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h outside them and 130 km/h on motorways. Signs and vehicle-category restrictions take priority, and speed must remain safe for weather and visibility. A car towing a trailer with a maximum permitted weight above 750 kg has a separate 90 km/h limit.
Use seat belts on all equipped seats. Children below 150 cm generally need an appropriate child restraint. Never place a rear-facing seat in front of an active frontal airbag. There is no universal “under 12 cannot sit in front” rule: height, restraint and statutory conditions matter.
Car drivers are subject to zero alcohol tolerance. Holding or operating a phone while driving is prohibited; hands-free use is permitted. Lights are required during the day, with daytime running lights allowed in good visibility. M1 passenger cars and N1 light goods vehicles need winter tyres on all axles on continuous snow, ice or frost, and when those conditions can reasonably be expected along the route.
Before you travel
Save your destination address and exact stop, and check the last return service, connections and ticket validity. For mountain trips, consider seasonal timetables and weather. Drivers should check charged road sections and parking beforehand: a vignette does not pay for city parking. See our separate PAAS article for resident parking information.
