Operators and your first number
The main mobile networks are Orange, Slovak Telekom, O2 and 4ka, with additional brands such as O2’s digital Radosť. Compare actual plans. Prepaid service (predplatená karta) can be useful before you know your long-term address and needs. A monthly package without commitment differs from a fixed-term contract (viazanosť).
Have identification ready to register a number; postpaid contracts may require additional documents. eSIM needs a compatible handset and an available activation method. For two numbers, verify simultaneous SIM/eSIM support rather than merely the presence of eSIM in the specifications.
What to compare before paying
List the post-promotion price, domestic and roaming data, speed limits, tethering, calls, texts, activation fees and minimum term. “Unlimited” may still have speed or fair-use limits. For prepaid plans, check credit expiry, automatic renewal and charges after the allowance runs out.
Coverage maps are outdoor guidance, not an indoor guarantee. Test reception at home, work and on your usual route. 5G depends on coverage, handset and plan; advertised peak speed is not sustained performance. Ask the receiving operator about number portability before independently cancelling the old number.
Roaming: country and call type matter
Check the country list and terms for your specific plan. Domestic and roaming allowances may differ, and extended overseas use can trigger fair-use rules. Current operators’ terms include Ukraine and Moldova, and some also the UK, but check each zone and allowance. Do not automatically treat Switzerland, Turkey, maritime or satellite networks as ordinary EU roaming.
Calling an overseas number from Slovakia using a Slovak SIM is an international call, not roaming. Near Austria or Hungary, watch which network is selected. Set spending limits and download maps before travelling outside included zones.
Home internet: check the address first
Check the full address and flat with Orange, Telekom, UPC, O2, 4ka and local providers. Fibre, cable and fixed wireless are different technologies. Ask about download and upload, latency, data limits, installation date, building wiring and owner consent. For video calls, stability and upload can matter more than headline download speed.
Compare total contract cost, including installation, equipment rental, post-discount pricing and extras. Get relocation, early-termination and equipment-return terms in writing. Early cancellation does not invariably mean paying every remaining monthly fee; the contract and applicable law determine the calculation.
With UPC, your own Wi-Fi router can be connected behind provider equipment; check bridge-mode support for your model. That does not mean any personally owned modem can replace UPC’s cable device. Troubleshoot first over Ethernet, then test Wi-Fi in different rooms, keeping results and the support case number.
