Shopping centres: choose by your route

Eurovea combines shopping with the left-bank Danube promenade; Aupark on Einsteinova in Petržalka is next to Sad Janka Kráľa. Avion on Ivanská cesta is useful for several large shops in one area; neighbouring IKEA has separate opening and collection arrangements. Check the individual shop, not just the building’s hours.

Nivy combines shops, a market, food outlets and the bus station; the green roof has separate hours and weather restrictions. Look for smaller shops on historic-centre pedestrian streets and Obchodná. For local produce and independent goods, check Stará tržnica’s calendar: regular markets and special events can have different hours and traders.

Groceries and household goods

Compare nearby Tesco, Lidl, BILLA and Kaufland for a regular grocery basket. Check unit prices, promotion dates and loyalty-card requirements. App coupons may need activation before checkout. A cheaper pack may cost more per kilogram, and a loyalty price is not necessarily the market’s lowest.

Compare IKEA and JYSK for furniture and storage, and HORNBACH and OBI for DIY, tools and garden supplies. Measure doorways, lifts and stairs as well as the installation space. Kerbside delivery, carrying upstairs, assembly and old-item removal are separate services: price each explicitly.

Holiday opening in 2026

Since November 2025, the old rule that all shops close on every public holiday is outdated. Restrictions on ordinary retail work by employees remain on 1 January, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, 24 December after noon, and 25–26 December, with statutory exceptions. Shops may open on other holidays but choose their own hours.

Check the exact store’s holiday-hours page before travelling. A mall, supermarket, pharmacy, restaurant and collection point in the same building may follow different schedules. Buy holiday groceries ahead; a map’s “open” label is not a substitute for the shop’s announcement.

Payment, returns and trip costs

Keep receipts or electronic proof. An in-store purchase without a defect has no general 14-day return entitlement; voluntary retailer terms apply. Distance contracts usually have a 14-day withdrawal period with exceptions. Online reservations followed by an in-store contract are a separate case. Fault complaints and change-of-mind returns use different rights.

Compare the total: goods, delivery or travel, parking and required services. A mall’s free parking allowance follows its own tariff and does not apply to PAAS streets. Check exit conditions, height limits and plate-registration requirements.
