Start with the chosen registry office
Agree the date, venue, ceremony language and evidence with the registry office, matrika. Both civil and church ceremonies require the matrika application. Section 28 of Act 154/1994 requires a foreigner’s documents at least 14 days before the wedding; the general seven-day application deadline does not override this.
Two witnesses are required at the ceremony. If a participant does not understand Slovak sufficiently, arrange an interpreter and confirm the requirements in advance. Discuss spouses’ and children’s surnames before completing the application.
Documents for a foreign fiancé
The basic set is a birth certificate, marital-status document, residence and citizenship evidence, and identification. A single document may establish several facts if accepted by the matrika. Marital-status evidence must be no more than six months old; this is not a universal age limit for every birth certificate.
Divorced applicants need a final divorce document with evidence of legal finality; widowed applicants need the spouse’s death certificate or another prescribed document. Ukrainian citizens should confirm the accepted marital-status format in advance rather than assuming a universal certificate of capacity to marry.
Translation and authentication
Foreign documents normally require an official Slovak translation by a registered translator. Documents issued in Czechia do not require Slovak translation. An ordinary agency translation without the required status, or a machine translation, does not replace the official version.
Apostille, superlegalisation or exemption depends on the issuing country and applicable treaty. Do not automatically apostille the whole set; confirm the matrika’s requirements first. If a document cannot be obtained, discuss the statutory exception procedure with the competent authority rather than substituting an arbitrary declaration.
Marriage registration fees
Under fee-schedule item 18, marriage of a Slovak or other EU citizen to a non-EU citizen costs €100; marriage of two non-EU citizens costs €280. If neither has permanent residence in Slovakia, the €280 fee replaces the citizenship-based fee rather than adding to it. Only one fiancé is charged.
Permission for a ceremony outside designated hours costs an additional €30 and outside the designated room €100, subject to statutory exceptions. Translations and an interpreter cost extra. Confirm the applicable combination when booking.
After the wedding: documents and residence
Obtain the marriage certificate and update identity documents and institutional records if your surname changes. Marriage does not itself grant residence or citizenship; family residence requires the applicable application. Ask the receiving foreign authority about translation and authentication of the Slovak certificate.
