Before you go

Check the venue, start time, ticket and age restrictions. Buy tickets for major concerts and festivals ahead of time; even free city events may have limited venue capacity.

Choosing a festival when you do not speak Slovak

Music, light installations and exhibitions generally depend less on language than literary discussions or spoken theatre. An English description does not guarantee an English programme: check the language of the specific session and availability of subtitles or interpretation. For children’s theatre, ask about age and duration; for exhibitions, whether a guided visit is needed or self-guided access is possible.

One festival, several venues

A city festival may have no single entrance: events are spread across halls, courtyards and outdoor venues. Choose two or three sessions and save their addresses before leaving. Allow time for travel and queues. A listing covering the full festival period does not mean every programme item runs daily; check each session or concert separately.

Free does not always mean no booking

Distinguish walk-in admission, a free ticket requiring registration and a paid festival pass. Small venues may require registration even when admission is free. Save the confirmation and check your arrival deadline. A ticket for one concert does not normally grant automatic access to other festival events.

Our way to plan an evening

Start with one event worth making the trip for, then add a nearby walk or a second programme item. Families may prefer an early start and the option to leave before the end; for evening installations, plan the journey home. This is more manageable than trying to see an entire festival in one night, especially in wet weather.
