ZOO Bratislava has presented a concept for a new giraffe, zebra and ostrich complex on its African Hill. The outdoor enclosure would expand to 8,000 m²—about eight times the current area—and move to meadows below the rhinoceros enclosure, farther from motorway noise.
Superatelier’s concept includes separate areas for giraffes and zebras, indoor housing, keeper facilities and extensive outdoor space. Visitor features include a covered panoramic terrace roughly at giraffe-eye level, indoor winter viewing and shaded paths.
The move is linked to plans for a science experience centre and planetarium on the current facility’s site. The zoo, CVTI SR and the Ministry of Education see this as a joint educational development, but the centre itself also remains a planned project.
Gelada baboons have already been added to African Hill and preparations are under way for a spotted-hyena enclosure. The proposed complex would continue redevelopment while improving animal conditions and visitor viewing.
The project remains at the preparation stage and the published architectural design is still a concept. It will be revised further; the city has not yet announced a construction timetable or budget.
