Bratislava begins closing its fountains for winter

Municipal organisation MARIANUM began the phased winter closure of Bratislava's fountains on 26 October. One of the final scheduled steps is on 30 October, when Družba fountain at Námestie slobody is due to be switched off.

MARIANUM maintains 70 water features across the city, including 44 fountains. Winter preparation involves cleaning, draining or pumping out water, protecting pipes against freezing and inspecting technical equipment.

The city says unusually warm autumn weather allowed the fountains to operate longer than usual this year. Winterisation is intended to protect equipment from frost and moisture, reduce the risk of damage and make restarting the fountains easier in spring.
