The city announced the symbolic opening of renewed public space linking Námestie SNP, Námestie Nežnej revolúcie and Poštová. The works form part of Živé námestie. The 2 October announcement concerns the first major renovation stage, rather than completion of every future phase of the project.
The city gives the renewed area as 16,401 square metres, with 37 new trees. Granite paving replaces mixed asphalt and concrete surfaces. The project adds planting, lighting, seating and more pedestrian space.
Rainwater-retention systems beneath the squares support irrigation and reduce pressure on sewers. Tram tracks and platforms at Námestie SNP were renewed, including higher boarding edges, shelters, guidance strips for visually impaired passengers and other equipment.
Heritage work includes outlining the former Church of St Lawrence in the paving, improving access to St James’s Chapel and restoring the lion fountain. Archaeology and preparation for a future pavilion will continue. Opening the renewed squares therefore does not mean every element of the wider programme is finished.
