Sociálna poisťovňa says the number of electronic documents it exchanged with foreign institutions through the European EESSI system passed 12 million in 2026. EESSI connects social security bodies in 32 European countries and replaces much of their paper correspondence with standardised electronic messages.
The exchanges support decisions on pensions, sickness and family benefits, unemployment benefits, occupational injuries and occupational diseases. For example, if a person worked and was insured in both Slovakia and Austria, the institutions can use EESSI to confirm insurance periods when assessing a pension claim.
According to Sociálna poisťovňa, it communicates through the system with more than 3,000 European institutions, and the exchanges concern roughly 60,000 to 70,000 of its clients each month. Slovakia's implementation is connected to 13 other registers and uses automated checks to validate data.
The authority stresses that EESSI is not a single central database containing the personal data of everyone in Europe. Information travels over a dedicated network separated from the public internet and is protected by several layers of encryption. The claim that the Slovak institution ranks second in Europe is based on Sociálna poisťovňa's own assessment and an industry meeting held in Prague in October 2026.
