Age range and covered care

VšZP’s current guidance specifies birth through 18 years plus 364 days for children and adolescents granted dočasné útočisko because of the war in Ukraine. Care is reimbursed under sections 2, 3 and 7 of Act 577/2004. This extends beyond the old “under 18 only” wording and is not limited to ambulance emergencies.

This reimbursement arrangement does not automatically enrol the child in public insurance or provide travel cover abroad. Tell the provider about existing Slovak or other EU public insurance, since billing follows a different basis. A child’s entitlement does not automatically extend to the parents.

Finding a paediatrician

Start with local paediatric practices and the e‑VÚC directory. State the child’s age and dočasné útočisko status when booking, and ask about capacity and registration. Lack of a temporary or permanent residence permit must not be treated as automatically cancelling the child’s healthcare entitlement.

NÚDCH publishes a “Všeobecná ambulancia pre deti / Дитяча амбулаторія загального профілю” page for Bratislava. Confirm that practice’s current appointments and age limits. It is not the only route to care; historic lists of special practices in Žilina and Košice should not replace a current directory check.

What to bring

Bring the child’s dočasné útočisko document, available ID, the parent’s or guardian’s ID, medical reports, medication list and vaccination history. Explain previous treatment and insurance. Vaccination records help plan follow-up. Not having a standard Slovak insurance card does not by itself mean there is no entitlement.

Co-payments and refusal

Coverage does not make every service or medicine free: statutory co-payments may remain. Before planned self-pay treatment, establish why payment is required and request a price list. If refused, clarify whether the issue is practice capacity, missing evidence or misunderstanding of status.

Show the practice VšZP’s current billing guidance. If you cannot find a paediatrician, contact the regional health department with the child’s age, address and refusal details. Keep correspondence and do not postpone urgent care while administrative issues are resolved.

Urgent care in Bratislava

Published NÚDCH paediatric APS hours at Limbová 1 are weekdays 16:00–20:00 and weekends/holidays 08:00–20:00. The hospital emergency department operates continuously. Call 155 or 112 for life-threatening emergencies. Check the current APS rota; coverage ages do not determine each department’s patient-age policy.
